About the SDS

As the Winter Solstice arrives, the Holly King feels the weight of the world upon his shoulders. He is weak, tired, and ready for sleep. He knows his brother the Oak King stirs from his sleep: the candles burn just a bit brighter, the sunlight stays just a bit longer. It is time for a change.

The Oak King struggles to shake the sleep from his eyes. He has been sleeping soundly these past few months, but now he needs to know what is happening while he was away. For him to reign efficiently and well, he needs to know what you know, hear what you need, and feel what you dream.

Therefore, he is putting out a call for letters! Write to the Oak and Holly Kings and tell them of your hopes, dreams, and projects that you want to start or continue in the new year. Get it all down on paper and send it out for the Gods to hear!

The Oak/Holly Kings are a couple of Luddites, and although they have this website, they do not accept letters as emails or any other kind of digital correspondence.

Where do I send my letter?

You can send your correspondence to the Oak/Holly King at the following postal address. Be sure to include your own name and return address so that the Solstice Kings can send back their replies.

So... What do I write about?

Writing to the Solstice Kings isn't quite like writing to Santa Claus. Santa's operation centers more around gifts and reindeer, and while we have great respect for their many successful years of operation, the Solstice Kings just don't have that kind of budget.

Instead, we invite you to reflect on your year and dream about your future. What are you thankful for? What lessons have you learned? What are your dreams and goals moving forward? Over the past few years, people have shared their joys involving family, work, love, projects, adventures, etc. But they have also written about disappointments, heartbreak, and tragedy, so the act of writing is part of their healing journey.

Share these hopes and dreams, joys and sorrows with the Solstice Kings, knowing that they will be read and acknowledged, but also that just by writing them down, this is a magical act of actualization.

In our keyboard-driven world, writing by hand is becoming a lost art. But there is something magical about putting pen to paper and giving form and physicality to your thoughts. The process of writing forces you to really think about your hopes and dreams, and the act of writing is the first stage to making them happen.
